With the release date of the new iPad up for speculation, Apple’s biggest rivals apparently, don’t want to be caught napping. Both Samsung and Amazon have come out with newer version of their popular tablets.

Amazon is pretty confident that their Kindle Fire HD can put up a tough fight with the iconic Apple tablet. So let’s see how they match up, head to head.

Price

  • The basic version of Amazon Kindle Fire HD is just $199; the larger screens and 4G models start at $499, going up to $599 and a little over.
  • Here the iPad 3 takes a beating, as the price starts at around $600, and it only goes upwards from there.

 

Operating System (OS)

  • The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is powered by a modified Android ICS, not Jellybean.
  • The iPad 3 runs on iOS 5.1.1, which also powers the iPhone 4S, this version of iOS allows Wi-Fi syncing.

 

Processor

  • The dual core 1.2 GHz OMAP4 4470 from Texas Instruments is the brains in the Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet.
  • The iPad 3 is run on the 1 GHz dual core processor called the Apple A5x.

 

RAM

  • Though Amazon Kindle Fire HD ’s memory is as yet undisclosed, since the non HD fire had 1 GB we can safely assume it will be the same or more for the Fire HD.
  • iPad 3 has 1024MB RAM.

 

Graphics

  • The not yet released Amazon tablet has the PowerVR SGX544.
  • The iPad 3 ’s graphics are powered by the Quad core PowerVR SGX543 chip.

 

Display

Now we come to the real thing,

  • The Amazon Kindle Fire HD device will be available in 7 and 8.9 inch display scratch resistant screens. The 7 inches will have a resolution of 1280×800 whereas the bigger display will have a higher resolution of 1920×1200.
  • iPad 3 ’s Retina (light sensor) display is of course, famed, and its 9 inch screen sports a resolution of 2048×1536 with 264 ppi.

 

Storage

It’s pretty Even Stevens here with both companies offering 16, 32 or 64 GB memory.

 

Camera

  • The new Amazon Kindle Fire HD has only a 1.3 MP front facing camera and it is mainly intended for video chatting; it has a customized version of Skype available. Whether the HD camera is 720p or 1080p is not yet clear.
  • The iPad 3, in addition to the 0.5 front facing camera, has one at the rear as well, with a 5 MP lens. 1080p video capture at 30 frames per second is possible on the iPad.

 

Network

  • All the Fire HD models support 2.4 and 5 GHz WI-Fi (dual band) signals, and the 8.9 inch tablets are equipped to access AT&T’s 4g LTE service.
  • The iPad 3, however, is available in Wi-Fi only, or 3G/4G enabled versions.

 

Phone Features

You can store any number of contacts on your iPad 3, but we don’t yet know the capacity of the Kindle Fire HD in this respect. Both devices have document viewers, calendars, and calculators.

 

Accessories

  • The Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet comes with a USB 2.0 cable and a quick guide.
  • The iPad 3 has documentation, a 10W USB power adaptor and a dock connector.

 

Dimensions

Both devices are slim and weigh more or less the same.

  • The 8.9 incher from Amazon measures 9.45×6.5x.35.
  • The smaller one is at 7.6×5.4x.4. iPad: 9.5×7.31x.4.
